Uniforms

Uniforms are an essential part of the Cub Scout experience.  In addition to their ability to convey an esprit de corps the uniform is a physical reminder to the scout of the many things scouting stands for and believes! Wearing the Cub Scout uniform and participating in pack/den uniform inspections will remind the scout of appropriate behavior and appearance.

Presenting a neat and tidy appearance will then remind him to live up to the tenets of the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and most importantly; the Cub Scout Motto!

Temporary Patches

Temporary patches are patches earned for attending events and participating in special events. Examples are a patch for doing an Earth Day activity, attending a sports game with the Scouts, participating in a food drive, attending the Blue and Gold Dinner, etc. Temporary patches should be displayed centered on the right pocket. Only ONE temporary patch is to be displayed at a time. A common way to display temporary patches is to hang a clear plastic patch holder from the pocket button and slip in the most recent patch. Some temporary patches come with loops attached. You open the pocket flap, put the loop over the button and put the flap back on, thereby attaching it to the pocket, and it hangs down over the right front pocket. The scout can choose which patch from his collection he wants to display on any given day.

This is a list of some of the most popular temporary patches:

  • Popcorn Sales
  • Any campout
  • Pinewood Derby
  • World Conservation Award
  • Scouting for Food
  • Conservation Good Turn
These temporary patches are shaped as if they should go on the pocket flap, but they don't:
  • Whittlin' Chip
  • Firem'n Chit
  • Totin' Chip

Note: The Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award DOES go on the right pocket flap. Each additional year it is earned, a pin can be added to the patch.

Patch Vest
Another method for displaying temporary patches is on the red patch vest. This vest is not part of the official uniform. It can be worn by Cub and Webelos Scouts for the display of temporary and other patches that have been given to the boy, or that the boy has earned as a part of the Scouting experience. The patch vest may be worn with the uniform except during uniform inspections.

Blanket Idea
If the boy chooses not to wear a vest, they could sew those patches onto a red blanket which they could use at campouts while sitting around the fire.

Denner Cord

The Denner Cord is a gold double-strand shoulder cord. The Assistant Denner Cord has a single strand. The cord is worn only during term of office and removed when the term is completed.

It is worn on the left shoulder with cord suspended under the arm. The cords may be worn on either the new shirt or the old shirt. If worn on the old shirt, the tab is centered where the epaulet would be. If worn with the new shirt, the tab should be worn UNDER the epaulet and NOT on top. The tab may be worn without the cord to indicate previous service as a denner.

Note: Webelo denners with the tan/olive uniform wear the cord, without the tab, under the left epaulet.

Attendance Award

This pin is earned by completing the requirements set by the Pack committee. To earn this award, a Scout can not miss more than one regularly scheduled Pack meeting and no more than two regularly scheduled Den meetings during the year (September through May). The first year they accomplish this they will receive the pin and the 1-year bar. The appropriate subsequent bars (2-year bar, 3-year bar, etc) are earned for each year these requirements are met.  The scout receives this award at the last Pack meeting of the year. This award is worn on the official uniform above the left pocket, between the pocket and the World Crest patch.

This award will be given to the scout who has achieved the attendance listed above. This excludes summertime activities.
